The Tragic Loss and Destruction of Notre Dame Cathedral

For anyone who has visited Paris, Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the most famous sights to visit. At 6:30 pm on Monday a fire broke out destroying the central spire, stained glass windows, and wooden interior. Paris, France and the World mourn for this loss of heritage with a vast outpouring of grief and support to rebuild and restore.

In 1160 the building began on Our Lady of Paris, with some of the most exquisite French Gothic Architecture. The cathedral has seen some troubling times and was desecrated during the French Revolution, before finding fame as the setting for Victor Hugo’s story ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame.’ The cathedral survived both World Wars and has been a refuge and beacon for Paris for over 800 years.

Enjoy these images of how I remember Notre Dame, the beautiful stained glassed windows, the high vaulted ceilings and how much it means to France.
